Mark Certificate FAQs
S/MIME certificates protect your email content through encryption and digital signatures. They ensure that your messages cannot be read by unauthorized parties and prove that emails haven't been tampered with in transit. S/MIME certificates also authenticate the sender's identity at varying levels (individual, organization, or both).
VMCs and CMCs don't encrypt email content but instead display your brand logo directly next to your sender name in recipients' inboxes. Many organizations bundle both solutions together: S/MIME to secure sensitive content and VMC/CMC to build brand trust and recognition.
Verified Mark Certificates (VMCs) require a registered trademark with your country's trademark office (like USPTO in the United States). VMCs are ideal for established brands and enterprises that have already invested in trademark protection.
Common Mark Certificates (CMCs) were created specifically to make the brand logo display accessible without trademark registration. You only need to prove your logo has been in consistent use for at least one year.
